1. Your Headshot Doesn’t Look Like You. Agents, casting directors, producers, and directors, all want your headshot to be an accurate representation of your look. If you want to land roles, look like your headshot.
2. Your Showreel Is Bad. Don’t fill your showreel with every piece of work you’ve ever done, put your best work first. A showreel is your calling card; your ticket to success. Make it awesome.
3. You’re Not Auditioning. If you’re not getting auditions, either point 1 and 2 need work or its time to get a new agent. Or if you are a freelancer, its time to get more proactive.
4. You’re Untrained. Acting training is the best thing for your career, its quite simple, if you do points 1,2 and 3 and are not landing roles, then you’re acting isn’t good enough.
This list was developed by Luke and Andrew after interviewing casting directors, agents, producers and professional actors for our online acting course, StageMilk Drama School.
Everyone can act. Under the perfect circumstances, with the right script, the right role. You can act. But those circumstances are rare. If you haven’t trained as an actor you won’t have the tool kit to approach a script that is less than perfect.
Acting training is about creating a foundation of technique so that when inspiration fails, you have something to fall back on. If you’re not landing roles it’s probably because you don’t have a process. So, if you have the chance to train, take it.
Whether it’s a full time theatre course, or StageMilk Drama School, just do it. Broadening your range through technique will dramatically (haha!) improve your chances of landing roles and having a career as an actor.
Taking control of your career can be scary. The great thing is that all of these problems are easy to solve. Who knows, these things might just change your life.
Being an actor isn’t just about acting. It’s also about luck and preparation. Giving yourself the best chance to meet luck half way is the key to having a career as an actor.
This is why we developed our online acting course, to help actors absolutely nail the preparation so that when luck strikes you are ready with everything you need to absolutely smash it.
