Acting is gambling: How to improve your chances!

Being an actor makes you a gambler. You are gambling your time, energy, creativity, and passion for the chance to win a lifetime pass to this incredible game. But before you push all of your chips into the middle, let’s take a look at how you can improve your chances of winning.

Experience

Acting is all about confidence; being calm under extreme amounts of pressure. Feeling relaxed on stage or screen is really tough when you haven’t done much work. So you have to get out there and get some more experience. Get on stage and in front of a camera as much as you possibly can. Bring your awareness to every new experience and learn everything you can about yourself and the acting process. Remember, work creates work. So getting out there and working is a great way to improve your chances of success in the acting game.

Use professional tools!

What does your current headshot say about you? If you were to post it on social media would people who know you like it? Or would they think it was weird? Having the right tools to promote yourself as an actor is essential. Acting is the game, so kit yourself out with professional standard tools. An amazing headshot is a great place to start. Make sure it looks like you (and hints at the type of roles you want to play)! Then get a showreel put together; it can be your professional work, or just a couple of really high quality audition tapes cut together. Now get a haircut and buy a couple of new shirts and you’ll be ready to go!

Sign with the right agent.

We can’t all sign with the best agents in the world. But signing with the right agent for you is the best way to improve your chances of success in acting. They represent you to the world. Having an agent and/or manager that knows who you are and where you want to go is a must! It’s really hard to win hands with the wrong cards, and it’s even harder to land roles that you’re not appropriate for. You have to get into the right rooms, at the right time, for the right roles. So sign with the right agent for you – and change agent if things aren’t working. It’s a business. Do what you have to do to succeed, or waste your chips, I mean life… Good luck!

Luck

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. So in an industry where everyone is looking (begging…) for their big break, how do you make sure that you are prepared when one comes your way? Well that’s easy. Do some training! Acting training is all about equipping yourself to make the most of any opportunities that you’re exposed to. Learn the craft, take the class, improve your process, develop a warm up, and grow your confidence through training.
